A Closer Look at Canada’s Seven True Startup Accelerators
Posted by Rob Lewis on Jun 7, 2013
Over the past three years, dozens of accelerators and accelerator-like programs have emerged in Canada. However, there is debate about their value—do accelerators hurt startups, and can the accelerators themselves succeed?
New research by MaRS Data Catalyst this week provided a “fact-based foundation for discussion.” The report cites Canada as having seven “true” accelerators: GrowLab in Vancouver; Hyperdrive in Waterloo; FounderFuel in Montreal; and Extreme Startups, INcubes, Jolt, and Utest in Toronto.
Check out MaRS’ visualization of Canadian accelerator data below, including how many offer equity for funding, how big the ecosystem is in terms of mentors and founders, and the selection process.

From the itBusiness.ca article: Elevator pitch videos from INcubes 3rd cohort
“Meet three startups… INcubes latest round… has a distinctly business-to-business approach, which stands apart from the consumer-focused products… in the past. Currently involved in a three-month acceleration program at INcubes’ new office, the trio of startups are currently honing their business models and products in time for their public debut on INcubes’ Demo Day, Feb. 27.”
"…TopThat is a web-based app, allowing people and businesses to create multi-media competitions and challenges. Competition managers have the ability to create pay-to-compete competitions. Compete against friends and judge everyone. Create your own competition. Compete against your friends. Judge and be judged.”
“Videogami just pivoted its startup to focus on interactive videos geared towards teaching hands-on skills.”
“L4NP is a web app that provides training for high-quality volunteer talent, as well as matching skilled volunteers with charitable & non-profit organizations.”

Is INcubes right for your Startup?
Is your model innovative, experimental, and in it’s early-phases? We’re startup founders ourselves. We built INcubes to be agile, ever evolving on lean methodology. INcubes embodies how an internet startup should be. There are roughly 10 Accelerator Programs that are peers to INcubes across Canada. Some offer up-front cash incentives for you to join. INcubes acts as your INvestor Relations to help you gain the financing your venture is ready for with access to the best pre-money capital that leaves you in control of your company. INcubes is unique in that we are not indentured to an educational institution, nor are we attached to a government agency, nor are we a division of a larger technology company. INcubes is what you want your venture to be; owned and operated by it’s founders and shareholders, agile, nimble, and adaptable.

Announcing INcubes DemoDay INtake02 Programme
It’s nearly [IN]cubes Demo Day • INtake 02 Wednesday, September 12, 1pm • INvite Only; at the Toronto Stock Exchange Tower . As INtake 02 grads on our second DemoDay, our 4 Startups are poised to make their presence known globally.
Toronto boasts the most exits of any city in Canada, although it severely lacks support for early-phase internet entrepreneurs. At DemoDay Toronto’s Tech Community looks back at what INcubes has spurred and how Canadian startups fit into global business.
INcubes has successfully brought support for early startup teams in Toronto and to Canada’s business centre in the form of our private INcubator and nimble, agile, and competitive Acceleration Program. While only just in our second INtake, we’ve been listed as among the top accelerators in Canada, and we’re the only of significance servicing early startups in Canada’s finance centre. This DemoDay is the place to be to see Canadian INternet INnovation emerge. This is what we founded INcubes to do.

The Hovr Hack[IN]thon at INcubes was a success. Special thanks to @jldavid (JeanLucDavid.com), an international #Toronto Hackathon star, for bringing his energy to the event. Hovr’s Robert Grezesi lead the hacking focus of the evening. Collaborative solutions were found. New ideas were born.
This was the second Hackathon hosted at INcubes, and this tradition looks sure to continue.
