Inside Lean Startup Machine Toronto Spring 2013

By: A. Traviss Corry
Published: May 8th, 2013
I recently had the valuable experience of mentoring six companies, along with other mentors and coaches, through the Lean Startup Machine Toronto hosted by INcubes, the business accelerator at which I am managing director. Lean Startup Machine is a three-day workshop franchise that has spread incredibly fast, to 40 cities in North America, through 109 workshops. The workshops teach a very scientific approach to validating business ideas and creating astoundingly viable business models at a rapid pace.

One of the organizers Jason Cheong-Kee-You said, “If you take the position of an impatient aggressive scientist, and you apply this mindset to a small team in a business context, you end up with Lean Startup. Lean Startup is just a series of hypotheses, and a set of experimental methods. It sounds simple, but knowing which questions are the most important to ask, and what methods to use to answer those questions, can save a dramatic amount of time.”

itbusiness.ca: The secret of why INcubes’ Demo Day was a success

By: A. Traviss Corry
Of all the DemoDay’s and similar events for Internet tech startups, investors, and influencers, I’ve been to in Canada, I think it’s safe to say that Incubes’ latest can be said to be a true innovator in terms of community engagement.

DemoDay 03

As the man behind the directing of the stage show and coaching of the startups; I’m biased!

If you’ve seen the buzz around the event, you’ll see that I’m not boasting much, but the secret to our success was actually, our incredible team, and network. It’s about people. The key is having the right people, in their place, with ownership over their roles, focused and inspired. An event like this takes long hours, endless energy, and sweat. People need to believe in what the purpose of the event is to create a success like we did, and everyone involved needs to benefit. Creating win-win scenarios for all mentors, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters is part of the engine behind what we did. You need to create incentive far beyond money. We were all doing something good for our community and for our future.

[IN]cubes DemoDay - Congratulations to the Graduates of INtake 03!

DemoDay was a huge success (in spite of the weather) and the companies did an amazing job!

It was a rare treat to hear Brad Feld speak and share his experiences as an entrepreneur and VC as well as his INsights on the importance of maintaing equilibrium .

Thank you to everyone who came out to the event and the INcubes mentors that worked with the startups over the past 3 months!

Also, thank you to Justyna Sokolowski for the beautiful photos!
