From our Mentors - April Dunford: "A Startup Marketing Maturity Model"

One of the most common conversations we have with startups revolves around what we know about high performance marketing teams. We’re in a unique position in that in addition to our own prior experiences as VP Marketing at several startups, RocketScope gives us access to many different companies with marketing teams that are performing at different levels. We started to ask ourselves – what distinguishes high performing marketing teams from the less successful ones? Are there patterns? If you (as a CEO or CMO) wanted to work toward making your team more successful, what path would you take?

Amrita and I put together our take on what we’re calling a “marketing maturity model” that describes the key characteristics that impact marketing results, and how these change as a marketing team evolves. Our hope is that this will be a helpful tool for companies trying to assess the current state of their marketing maturity as well as a roadmap for how to improve.

We sent an early version of this model to our email subscribers a couple of weeks ago (If you aren’t already part of our gang, subscribe to our newsletter using the form at the bottom of this post) and the reaction to this was great. Here’s today’s version of the model:

Mark Evans: "ARE MARKETING AND SALES THE SAME THING FOR STARTUPS?"

APRIL 5, 2013 MARK EVANS

sales marketing

It used to be that marketing and sales were two separate creatures.

In one corner, marketing focused on building brand awareness among target audiences. In another corner, sales was about driving leads and deals. Like church and state, the two worlds rarely converged.

For startups, however, this model can’t be embraced because, frankly, it doesn’t work. When you’re operating with limited or modest resources, having marketing and sales operate independently with their own distinct mandates is a recipe for disaster.

Instead, marketing and sales need to be mashed together or, at least, structured to be cohesive and coordinated groups that support and nurture each other. In many respects, marketers need to be salespeople, while salespeople have to be marketers.

Mark Evans: "If I don't get you, you don't get me"

INcubes’ mentor, Mark Evans’ latest blog post offers valuable INsight for startups as INtake 02 prepares for Demo Day.

IF I DON’T GET YOU, YOU DON’T GET ME

In a world in which many people are time-strapped, multi-tasking and mentally scattered, the “get” factor is huge for startups.

By “get”, I mean how well and quickly a startup tells potential users what it does and what their product or service will do for them. It sounds simple but it’s difficult to do.

If people don’t “get” what a startup offers, it’s game over because they will quickly click away. On the other hand, a startup that makes it easy for people to “get” what they do has a great shot at winning over a new user or customer.

[IN]tensive Day 08 • [IN]take 01

As INtake 01 approaches completion, INcubes goes out with a BANG for the last INtensive Day of our first INtake.

Tim Ryan, founder and CEO of Vestiigo.com, spoke to our startups IN a talk titled  “What You Should Be Spending Your Time On”.  Being a successful entrepreneur, Tim was able to give sound advice on how to  accomplish goals, and waste as little time as possible.

Freshbooks’ Saul Colt gave an exceptional talk, “Getting Noticed From the Start”. He INspired the audience by sharing many of his creative and non-traditional marketing methods that are sure to get a company noticed.  His formula, make them think, laugh and/or cry, is one to remember.

Grant Ritchie, CEO of Locationary.com, a very successful startup, was our next mentor IN. Grant’s session, “Wining and Dining the INvestors you Want”, explained the blunt realities and struggles a startup experiences when working towards gaining capital.  He provided specific and detailed tips on the resources and INvestors available to Toronto startups.

INoffice INformal INvestor Pitches continued this week, with a new panel of INvestors to give their opinions and suggestions. Daniel Klass from Klass Capital and Round 13 Capital’s Scott Pelton, listened to the INcubes startups’ pitch decks and offered valuable feedback for INcubes Demo Day, on February 28, 2012.

As an added treat, the following morning, the dedicated and always helpful Gerard Buckley, was IN to speak on “Accessing Capital From an Angel Network”, and to add some value to the startup pitch decks.

Thank you to all Mentors and INvestors who participated IN our very successful and very INformative INtensive Days!
